Outlook.com and Hotmail SMTP, IMAP and POP Settings

Outlook.com and Hotmail SMTP, IMAP and POP Settings

You can use your Outlook.com email account on devices like phones and computers to connect with the native email app. These settings are for Microsoft personal email addresses, including those ending in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com and @msn.com. Hotmail is now Outlook.com.

Use these settings to set up the incoming mail server information for your Outlook.com or Hotmail account:

Inbound Servers:

Type Server Address Port Encryption
IMAP Server (SSL/TLS) outlook.office365.com 993 SSL/TLS
POP Server (SSL/TLS) outlook.office365.com 995 SSL/TLS

Outbound Servers:

Type Server Address Port Encryption
SMTP Server (STARTTLS) smtp-mail.outlook.com 587 STARTTLS

Other Settings

  • Username: your full email address, for example you@outlook.com or you@hotmail.com.
  • Password: your Microsoft account password. If it is not recognized, or you are adding the account to a smart device such as a home security camera, you may need an app password.
  • Authentication: OAuth2 / Modern Auth. Outlook.com requires modern authentication, so the app should open a Microsoft sign-in window instead of asking you to type a password into the server settings. Basic password-only sign-in stopped working on September 16, 2024.
  • Encryption: SSL/TLS for IMAP (993) and POP (995), STARTTLS for SMTP (587).

Turn On POP or IMAP in Outlook.com

POP and IMAP access is turned off by default. Before you add your account to another app, turn it on:

  • Step 1: In Outlook.com, select Settings > Mail > Forwarding and IMAP.
  • Step 2: Under POP and IMAP, switch on Let devices and apps use POP or Let devices and apps use IMAP, depending on which one you plan to use.
  • Step 3: Select Save.

Troubleshooting

  • The app does not support modern authentication: Because Outlook.com requires OAuth2 / Modern Auth, an app that can only send a plain username and password will fail to connect. Check whether the app offers an Outlook.com (or Outlook, Hotmail and Live) account option and use that instead of a manual setup. In Mozilla Thunderbird, set the authentication method for both the server and the outgoing server (SMTP) to OAuth2. If the app cannot do modern authentication, Microsoft recommends using the free Outlook app instead.
  • You use 2-step verification: Approve the sign-in request when the app asks you to sign in with Microsoft. If a device cannot use security codes or approval prompts, create an app password in the Advanced security options of your Microsoft account and enter it in place of your normal password. Microsoft says you only need an app password if two-step verification is on and the device does not support it.
  • Wrong port or encryption: Double-check that IMAP uses port 993 with SSL/TLS, POP uses port 995 with SSL/TLS, and SMTP uses port 587 with STARTTLS. Use the server names exactly as shown in the tables above.
  • Connection error with IMAP in several apps: Microsoft notes that you can get a connection error if you set up the same account with IMAP in more than one email app. Sign in at account.live.com/activity, open the most recent Session Type entry under Recent activity, and select This was me, then try your app again.
