Mozilla Thunderbird is a free desktop email app for Windows, Mac and Linux. If your email is hosted by Thexyz (including xyz.am addresses and your own domain), Thunderbird usually can’t find your settings automatically, so you enter them by hand. This guide walks through the new Thunderbird Account Hub screen by screen, with the exact Thexyz IMAP and SMTP settings to type in.
Quick answer
In Thunderbird, add a new email account, type your name and email address, and click Manual configuration. Choose IMAP and click Set up account. For incoming mail use imap.thexyz.com, port 993, SSL/TLS. For outgoing mail use smtp.thexyz.com, port 465, SSL/TLS. Your username is your full email address and the authentication method is Normal password. Click Connect and enter your password.
Thexyz settings for Thunderbird
| Setting | Value | Port | Connection security |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incoming server (IMAP) | imap.thexyz.com | 993 | SSL/TLS |
| Incoming server (POP3, optional) | pop.thexyz.com | 995 | SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing server (SMTP) | smtp.thexyz.com | 465 (recommended) | SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing server, alternative port | smtp.thexyz.com | 587 | STARTTLS (or Autodetect) |
| Username (both servers) | Your full email address, for example you@yourdomain.com | ||
| Authentication | Normal password (your mailbox password, or an application password) |
These are the settings for Thexyz Email accounts that sign in at mail.thexyz.com. If you use classic Thexyz webmail at webmail.thexyz.com, see the note further down.
Before you start
- Install Thunderbird from thunderbird.net. This guide was tested in Thunderbird 159, which uses the new Account Hub for adding accounts.
- Have your full email address and its password ready. If you turned on two-step verification for your mailbox, create an application password in Thexyz Webmail and use it instead of your normal password.
- Your domain’s DNS needs to point to Thexyz, otherwise mail won’t arrive.
Step 1: Add your email address
The first time you open Thunderbird, the Account Hub opens on its own. If you already use Thunderbird, open the menu (the three lines at the top right), choose Add Account, then Email.
- Type your Full name (this is the name people see) and your Email address.
- Click Manual configuration under the email address. You can also click Continue; Thunderbird will look for settings and, when it can’t find them for a Thexyz address, it takes you to the same next screen.

Step 2: Choose IMAP
- On Choose an email account type, pick IMAP (marked Recommended). IMAP keeps your mail in sync with Thexyz Webmail, your phone and any other device.
- Click Set up account.

Choose POP3 only if you want to download mail to this one computer. In that case use pop.thexyz.com, port 995, SSL/TLS.
Step 3: Enter the incoming (IMAP) server
- Hostname:
imap.thexyz.com - Username: your full email address. Thunderbird fills this in from step 1; check that it isn’t just the part before the @.
- Authentication method: Normal password
- Connection security: SSL/TLS

- Scroll down a little to the Port field. Thunderbird fills in 993 once you pick SSL/TLS. If it’s empty, type 993.

Step 4: Enter the outgoing (SMTP) server
Keep scrolling down the same screen to the outgoing server fields.
- Hostname:
smtp.thexyz.com - Leave Same username as incoming server checked, so Thunderbird signs in to SMTP with your full email address too.
- Authentication method: Normal password, and Connection security: SSL/TLS.
- Port: 465. Thunderbird fills this in for SSL/TLS. If your network or internet provider blocks 465, use 587 instead (see Troubleshooting).

Step 5: Connect and finish
- Click Connect. Thunderbird checks the settings and asks for your password. Enter your mailbox password (or your application password) and let Thunderbird remember it if you like.
- When Thunderbird confirms the account was created, finish the Account Hub (click Done or Finish, whichever it shows). Your Thexyz folders then appear in the left pane.
Send yourself a test message to confirm that both sending and receiving work.
Classic Thexyz accounts (webmail.thexyz.com)
If you sign in to your mail at webmail.thexyz.com rather than mail.thexyz.com, your mailbox is on the classic platform. Use secure.emailsrvr.com as both the incoming and outgoing hostname, with IMAP port 993, POP port 995 and SMTP port 465, all SSL/TLS. Everything else in this guide is the same.
Troubleshooting
- Can’t send, but receiving works: some networks block port 465. Edit the outgoing server (Account Settings, Outgoing Server (SMTP), Edit) and change the port to 587. Thexyz lists 587 as an alternative port; set Connection security to STARTTLS.
- Password keeps failing: make sure the username is your full email address on both servers, and that authentication is Normal password. If your account has two-step verification, use an application password.
- “Authentication required” or relay errors when sending: both the IMAP and SMTP servers require authentication. Check that the outgoing server isn’t set to No authentication.
- Thunderbird can’t find the server: check the hostnames for typos (for example, a stray letter after .com). Thunderbird shows a green check next to a field when the format is valid, but that doesn’t test the connection.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Thexyz IMAP and SMTP settings?
IMAP is imap.thexyz.com on port 993 with SSL. SMTP is smtp.thexyz.com on port 465 with SSL, with 587 as the alternative port. Use your full email address as the username for both.
Should I use IMAP or POP3 for Thexyz in Thunderbird?
Use IMAP if you read mail on more than one device or in Thexyz Webmail, because it keeps folders and read status in sync. POP3 (pop.thexyz.com, port 995) downloads mail to one computer.
Where is the old Thunderbird account setup screen?
Recent Thunderbird versions replaced it with the Account Hub shown in this guide. You reach it from the menu with Add Account, then Email, and you get to the manual settings with Manual configuration.
Do these settings work for xyz.am addresses?
Yes. xyz.am mailboxes are hosted by Thexyz, so they use the same imap.thexyz.com and smtp.thexyz.com servers.
Which port should I use for sending, 465 or 587?
Start with 465 and SSL/TLS, which Thexyz recommends. Switch to 587 only if 465 is blocked where you are.
